The Mercedes driver held his nerve throughout the short-format race, maintaining his advantage at the front to secure victory in the Sprint and claim valuable championship points ahead of Sunday’s main race.

Russell Controls the Race Despite Ferrari Pressure

Starting from the front, Russell quickly found himself under pressure from the Ferrari duo behind. Hamilton made a strong early move and briefly challenged for the lead, creating an intense battle at the front of the field.

The trio exchanged positions and ran close in the opening phase of the race, with Russell eventually regaining control and managing his pace to stay ahead.

Despite the sustained challenge from the Ferraris, Russell kept a cool head and maintained the lead through the 19-lap Sprint, crossing the finish line to claim victory for Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team.

Leclerc finished second for Scuderia Ferrari, while Hamilton completed the podium in third place.

Safety Car Adds Late Drama

The race saw added tension when a Safety Car was deployed following a stoppage involving Nico Hulkenberg. The interruption temporarily compressed the field and gave the chasing drivers another opportunity to attack once racing resumed.

However, Russell handled the restart perfectly and quickly pulled away again, preventing Leclerc and Hamilton from mounting a serious late challenge.

Sprint Race Top Finishers

Behind the leading trio, Lando Norris secured fourth place for McLaren, while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli finished fifth after receiving a time penalty earlier in the race.

The rest of the points-paying positions were filled by Oscar Piastri, Liam Lawson, and Oliver Bearman.

Meanwhile, reigning world champion Max Verstappen endured a difficult race and finished outside the points after struggling with tyre degradation and car balance.

Momentum for Mercedes Before the Grand Prix

Russell’s victory in the Sprint strengthens Mercedes’ momentum during the early part of the season. The result also provides a confidence boost heading into the main race, where the team will look to convert their strong pace into another major result.

For Ferrari, the double podium from Leclerc and Hamilton signals encouraging pace, suggesting they could challenge Mercedes again when the full Grand Prix takes place.

With teams closely matched and several drivers in contention, the stage is set for an exciting Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai.
