IPL 2026: BCCI Introduces Seven New Rules for Teams Ahead of Season Start

Newspoint

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced seven new rules for IPL 2026, which is set to begin on March 28. These guidelines will be mandatory for all 10 teams participating in the 19th season. The new regulations primarily focus on practice routines, player movement, and overall discipline rather than on-field gameplay.

One of the key rules states that teams will not be allowed to practice or train on match days.

Players can only engage in light warm-up sessions on the day of the game. In addition, teams are restricted to playing a maximum of two practice matches before or during the tournament. These matches will require prior approval from the BCCI and must not exceed a duration of three and a half hours.

The BCCI has also introduced strict rules regarding practice facilities. Teams will no longer be allowed to share practice nets, and each franchise will be provided with separate nets.

Even if nets are vacant, teams cannot use facilities assigned to others. This move aims to maintain fairness and avoid any potential advantage.

Another significant rule concerns pitch usage. No team, including the home side, will be permitted to practice on the main match pitch for four days leading up to their first home game. Instead, separate practice pitches will be allocated for activities such as range hitting, throw-downs, and bowling drills. If multiple teams train consecutively, a fresh pitch will be prepared for each session.

Restrictions have also been placed on player movement and personal arrangements. Family members and friends will not be allowed to travel with players during the tournament. Additionally, players will be required to use the team bus for all official travel, including practice sessions and matches.

Lastly, the BCCI has barred players and support staff from sitting near LED advertising boards on the field during matches, citing safety and operational concerns.

These new rules reflect the BCCI’s effort to bring greater structure, discipline, and uniformity to the IPL, ensuring smooth conduct of the tournament both on and off the field.
