IPL 2026: David Payne Joins SRH as Jack Edwards Ruled Out Due to Injury
The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have acquired the services of England's David Payne as a replacement for the Australian Jack Edwards for the IPL 2026. Payne has been roped in at a sum of INR 1.5 crore after Edwards has been ruled out of the league due to an injury.
The 35-year-old left-arm fast bowler has represented England in just one ODI game so far and has considerable T20 experience under his belt with 304 wickets at an average of 21.16 from 233 games. His sole outing for England in the whites was against the Netherlands in the year 2022, when he was handed his debut cap and opened the bowling along with David Willey, he went on to claim one wicket from that encounter.
Payne has been exceptional at the domestic level and the leading wicket-taker for Gloucestershire in T20 cricket. He had a memorable 2024 T20 Blast campaign as he became the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 33 wickets in 17 games and has also appeared in The Hundred for the Welsh Fire.
The left-arm pacer has also had stints in the franchise cricket. Payne was part of the title-winning Perth Scorchers team in the Big Bash League and had a brief stay with Adelaide Strikers. He has represented the Desert Vipers for two seasons in ILT20.
The SRH have also confirmed that Jack Edwards who was bought by the team for INR 3 crore will miss the entire IPL 2026 due to the injury. The team is also facing another dilemma as the Australian pace bowler Pat Cummins will be missing the first leg of the tournament and Ishan Kishan has been appointed as the stand-in captain.
