This would place Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium as the preferred venue for the curtain-raiser featuring Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, discussions at the pre-auction meeting in Abu Dhabi revealed that the availability of the venue remains a major concern for franchises.

Chinnaswamy Stadium Faces Clearance Hurdles

The hosting of IPL 2026 matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium depends heavily on government approvals. The Karnataka State Cricket Association has so far received only conditional clearance from the state government, with strict safety and security requirements attached. These concerns stem from the tragic stampede on June 4 during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL title celebrations, which resulted in at least 11 deaths and left several others injured. Since that incident, the state government has denied permission for major cricket events at the venue, prompting the BCCI to shift Women’s World Cup matches away from Bengaluru.

BCCI Remains Hopeful About IPL 2026 Opener

Addressing questions about the IPL 2026 opening match, a senior BCCI official said, “We hope so,” when asked about the possibility of starting the season at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. The official added that Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar had publicly expressed optimism regarding the hosting of IPL 2026 matches. Shivakumar was quoted as saying that the government was positive about allowing games and had instructed Home Minister G Parameshwara to engage with KSCA officials to resolve pending concerns.

IPL 2026 Auction Builds Momentum in Abu Dhabi

Alongside the IPL 2026 schedule, attention has also shifted to the upcoming auction, which will be held at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday. This will mark the third straight year that the IPL auction takes place outside India, following earlier editions in Dubai and Jeddah. Ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, the BCCI finalised the player pool by adding 19 new names, including Bengal opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, New Zealand pacer Ben Sears and South African all-rounder Ethan Bosch.

Among them, 40 players have been listed at the maximum base price of Rs 2 crore.
