Football legend Lionel Messi has reacted positively to the massive 70-foot statue erected in his honour in Kolkata, with his team expressing happiness over the tribute. West Bengal Minister and Sree Bhumi Sporting Club President Sujit Bose confirmed that Messi has given his consent for the statue, which has become a major attraction for football fans across the city.
Installed at the Sree Bhumi Sporting Club in Lake Town, South Dum Dum, the towering iron statue depicts Messi holding the FIFA World Cup trophy, symbolising his historic triumph with Argentina. The statue is set to be virtually unveiled by Messi himself as part of his GOAT Tour India 2025 , adding to the excitement surrounding his visit.
Speaking to ANI, Sujit Bose said that Messi and his management were pleased after seeing the statue. “We have talked to his manager, and today we will talk to Messi... He gave his consent for the statue and they are also happy...,” Bose told ANI.
Notably, this visit marks Messi’s return to India after 14 years. His last visit was in 2011, when he played a friendly match at the Salt Lake Stadium, where Argentina defeated Venezuela 1-0. With fans gearing up for grand celebrations, Messi’s presence in the City of Joy has turned into a landmark moment for Indian football enthusiasts.
