Positive Turn In Health After Critical Week

Martyn was admitted to hospital on December 27 after his health deteriorated rapidly. Doctors placed him in an induced coma as a precautionary measure while treatment continued. After days of uncertainty, the former batter has now regained consciousness and is responding positively to medical care.

Australia cricket great Adam Gilchrist confirmed the encouraging development, saying Martyn “is now able to talk and respond to the treatment”. The update has been described by those close to the family as nothing short of extraordinary, given the seriousness of his condition just days earlier.

Family And Medical Team Encouraged By Recovery

Gilchrist shared that Martyn’s recovery since coming out of the coma has exceeded expectations.
“He has responded extraordinarily well since coming out (of the coma) to the point where his family feels it's like some sort of miracle,'' Gilchrist said.

The progress has been so strong that there is growing optimism about the next phase of treatment.
“It has been so positive that they're hopeful he will be able to move out of the ICU into another part of the hospital which is representative of what a great recovery it's been and how quickly it has flipped around,'' he added.

Martyn will remain in hospital as doctors continue treatment and monitor his recovery closely.

Outpouring Of Support Plays Emotional Role

During the difficult period, Martyn’s partner Amanda remained in close contact with friends and well-wishers. Gilchrist explained how deeply the family was moved by the support they received from across the cricketing world.

“Amanda just really wants to say to everyone she is convinced that the love, goodwill and sense of care that they felt from everybody, via messages and via the coverage in the press really helped him,” he said.

The emotional backing has been a source of strength for the family as Martyn continues his recovery journey.
“They just feel blessed so many people have wanted to support him in his time in need. He will remain in hospital and continue to receive treatment but the turnaround has been miraculous.''

Celebrated Career That Defined An Era

Damien Martyn enjoyed an illustrious international career, representing Australia in 67 Tests, 208 One Day Internationals, and four Twenty20 Internationals between 1992 and 2006. He is widely regarded as one of the finest ODI finishers the game has produced, admired for his calm temperament and elegant stroke play.

In Test cricket, Martyn scored 4,406 runs at an impressive average of 46.37, including 13 centuries. His ODI record was equally strong, with 5,346 runs at an average of 40.80, featuring five centuries and 37 half-centuries.

One of his most memorable achievements came during the 2004 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India, where he was named Player of the Series. His consistency played a key role in Australia securing a rare away series victory, cementing his reputation as a dependable performer on the biggest stages.

As Martyn continues his recovery, the cricket world remains united in hope, celebrating not just his achievements on the field, but the resilience he is now showing off it.
