Mohamed Salah had voiced his wish to remain with Liverpool for the entirety of his career. The 33-year-old confirmed on Tuesday that he will leave the Reds at the end of the season.

Salah penned a two-year contract in April 2025 but will exit Anfield a year sooner than anticipated after reaching an agreement with the club. The attacker arrived from Roma in 2017 and has been instrumental to Liverpool's success in the years since.

The Egypt international has secured two Premier League titles and the Champions League with the Reds, along with numerous other major trophies. However, Salah will not realise his aspiration of finishing his playing days as a Liverpool player after revealing his plans to move on in the summer.

"If you ask me, I would love to stay until the last day of my football career, but I can't say much about that - it's not in my hands," he told Sky Sports in 2021. "It depends on what the club want, not on me.

"At the moment I can't see myself ever playing against Liverpool. That would make me sad. It's hard, I don't want to talk about it, but it would make me really sad. At the moment I don't see myself playing against Liverpool but let's see what will happen in the future."

Those remarks were made prior to the Reds legend penning a new contract in July 2022 and suggest his next move will be outside of Europe's elite to avoid the potential of facing them on the opposing side. To date, Salah has netted 255 goals in 435 matches for the club, securing four Premier League Golden Boots.

Before he arrived at Liverpool, Salah's previous spell in English football saw him struggle to secure a spot in Chelsea's first team early in his career. However, he exceeded all expectations with the Reds and currently ranks third on Liverpool's all-time scoring chart.

In a video shared on social media on Tuesday, Salah said: "Hello everyone. Unfortunately the day has come. This is the first part of my farewell. I will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.

"I wanted to start by saying that I never imagined how deeply this club, this city, these people, would become part of my life. Liverpool is not just a football club, it's a passion, it's a history, it's a spirit. I can't explain in words to anyone not part of this club."

He added: "Leaving is never easy. You gave me the best time of my life. I will be always one of you. This club will always be my home to me and my family. Thank you for everything. Because of all of you, I will never walk alone."

Salah will aim to steer the Reds towards another trophy before his exit. Arne Slot's team have progressed to the FA Cup and Champions League quarter-finals.

Following the player's video, a statement from the club read: "Mohamed Salah is to bring the curtain down on his illustrious career with Liverpool FC at the end of the 2025-26 season. The forward has reached an agreement with the Reds that will see him close a remarkable nine-year chapter at Anfield.

"Salah expressed his wish to make this announcement to the supporters at the earliest possible opportunity to provide transparency about his future due to his respect and gratitude for them."
