Mohamed Salah given Lionel Messi transfer option after Arne Slot Liverpool outburst

Major League Soccer sides San Diego and Chicago Fire could both be in the running to lure Mohamed Salah away from Liverpool following his public outburst over the weekend. The 33-year-old's future at Anfield is in doubt after he accused the club of abandoning him.

Big names in football, such as David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, and most recently Lionel Messi, have all moved to the United States. Over the weekend, Messi helped Inter Miami win their first MLS Cup after beating Thomas Muller's Vancouver Whitecaps 3-1.

Salah, who was omitted from the starting lineup by Arne Slot for a third straight game in Saturday's 3-3 draw with Leeds United, could be the next global star to make the move to America. The Egyptian forward is one of Africa's most influential sports profiles after his success with Liverpool.

Reports of what's to come for Salah have followed in the past 48 hours, with interest from Saudi Arabia expected to revive itself after Al-Ittihad failed in a £150million move for him in 2023. According to The Athletic, a move to the United States isn't ruled out.

San Diego FC, owned by Egyptian-British billionaire Mohamed Mansour, have been namechecked as one of the clubs that make sense for Salah. The 2025 expansion team finished first in the Western Conference this year.

Chicago Fire are also reportedly eyeing a global star. After failing in a pursuit of Neymar before his return to Santos, the Fire were in the running to sign Kevin De Bruyne following his exit from Manchester City.

The Athletic claims that the club, owned by big-spending Joe Mansueto, attempted to sign Salah before his contract extension in April. On the back of their resounding win over the weekend, Miami are also expected to be connected with Salah.

With Jordi Alba retiring set to free up a designated player spot, it's said that the Beckham-owned franchise already have plans in place to fill the spot when the left-back leaves the club. However, no public decision has been as of yet.

Salah's future was placed into doubt on Saturday night after his post-match interview with reporters at Elland Road. "I'm very, very disappointed to be fair. I have done so much for this club down the years and especially last season," he said. "Now I'm sitting on the bench and I don't know why.

"It seems like the club has thrown me under the bus. That is how I am feeling. I think it is very clear that someone wanted me to get all of the blame. I got a lot of promises in the summer and so far I am on the bench for three games so I can't say they keep the promise.

“I said many times before that I had a good relationship with the manager and all of a sudden, we don't have any relationship. I don't know why, but it seems to me, how I see it, that someone doesn't want me in the club.

“This club, I always support it. My kids will always support it. I love the club so much I will always do. I called my mum yesterday - you guys didn't know if I would start or not, but I knew."

The forward, who signed a new contract at Liverpool in April, also claimed he no longer has a relationship with Slot, and reported for training on Sunday as scheduled. However, there are doubts over his inclusion in the trip to Inter on Tuesday.
