New Wrexham sack verdict speaks volumes for Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac

Wrexham have been urged to stick by boss Phil Parkinson after a club legend slammed reports questioning his position as "disgraceful". The former Sunderland and Bolton manager has guided the Red Dragons, co-owned by Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, to three straight promotions.

His remarkable feat of steering the Welsh outfit from the National League to the Championship has gained global attention through the hit Welcome to Wrexham series on Disney+. But Parkinson's team initially struggled to adapt to second-tier football this campaign, with speculation surfacing in mid-September that senior figures had discussed his position. The claims were subsequently rubbished by Wrexham director Shaun Harvey, who insisted the manager retains significant goodwill at the club.

Ex-Wrexham and Swansea City forward Lee Trundle has now backed the club's decision to support Parkinson, regardless of his patchy Championship record in previous roles. Despite lingering concerns among some pundits about his long-term credentials for the job, Trundle has lashed out at those questioning the 57-year-old.

"It was disgraceful when you look at what he's done for the football club, going from the National League into the Championship," he told Mirror Football in association with Casino Sites.

"You've got to look at the level that you're at. It's going to be a learning curve for Phil as well at this point. He's facing stuff which he hasn't faced over the last couple of years because they've had that much success.

"For his job to be called into question and for people to pick him out, I thought that was wrong. He's done an amazing job at the club and I think that he has every right to be the manager."

Wrexham found themselves languishing just one spot above the Championship drop zone at the beginning of this week after suffering a 1-0 loss at Stoke City last Saturday. But they eventually secured their maiden home league victory of the campaign following a 1-0 win over Oxford United at the Racecourse Ground on Wednesday night.

The outcome, delivered via Nathan Broadhead's first-half strike, lifted Wrexham to 15th in the standings. Trundle, who launched his professional journey with the club in 2001 before subsequently moving to the Swans, knows all about the difficulties of competing in the second tier.

And he reckons Wrexham are perfectly positioned to cement their place in the division after splashing out approximately £33million on fresh talent over the summer.

Trundle said: "I always knew this season was going to be the one where it starts to level out a little bit. The Championship is a completely different beast to League One, but I still think that Wrexham have done well.

"They'll stay in the division this year...and they've made good signings. If you put a run of games together in the Championship then you end up at the top end of the table. It's still early doors, with a lot of points to play for."

Wrexham are set to take on high-flying Middlesbrough in their next Championship match, before welcoming Cardiff City for an all-Welsh showdown in the Carabao Cup fourth round on Tuesday evening.
