Newspoint

The group stage of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 has wrapped up, and now the tournament is gearing up for the Super Eight phase. Over the last few weeks, fans have been treated to some thrilling matches across various venues in India and Sri Lanka. While some outcomes were predictable, a few surprises certainly made headlines.

With the qualification spots now filled, eight teams are still in the race for the title. In the next round, they’ll be divided into two groups of four, starting fresh since the points won’t carry over. Each team will play three matches, and the top two from each group will move on to the semi-finals. Interestingly, during the group stage, a handful of lesser-known players stepped into the spotlight with standout performances. Some of these efforts not only secured their teams a spot in the next round but also showcased individual brilliance.

Blessing Muzarabani

Zimbabwe has emerged as the unexpected contender in the T20 World Cup 2026, with their victories stemming from impressive all-around play. The batters rose to the occasion when it mattered most, while Muzarabani spearheaded the bowling attack. This tall pacer has taken nine wickets in just three matches, boasting an average of 7.88 and an economy rate of 5.91.

Muzarabani’s remarkable spell of 4/17 against Australia in Colombo was pivotal in securing a historic win, and his 2/38 against Sri Lanka in a high-scoring match capped off Zimbabwe's unbeaten run in the group stage. With his ability to bowl effectively both with the new ball and at the death, his pace and bounce have posed challenges for top-order batters throughout the tournament.

Shadley van Schalkwyk

Even though the USA didn’t make it to the Super Eight stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, one player really shone during their campaign: pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk. At 37 years old, he emerged as the tournament's leading wicket-taker after the group stage, snagging an impressive 13 wickets in just four innings with an average of 7.76.

Van Schalkwyk kicked things off with two remarkable spells, taking 4/25 against both India and Pakistan. In the match against India at the Wankhede, he disrupted the top order, leaving the Suryakumar Yadav-led team in a tough spot during the Powerplay. He followed that up with another four-wicket haul against Pakistan in Colombo. Additionally, he contributed with figures of 3/21 against the Netherlands and 2/30 against Namibia. While the USA couldn’t quite match their 2024 success, van Schalkwyk’s stellar performance with the ball made sure the Associate nation left a lasting impression on the tournament.

Brian Bennett

Brian Bennett has been a key player in Zimbabwe’s remarkable journey to the Super Eights at the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. The opener scored an impressive unbeaten 63 off 48 balls against Sri Lanka in Colombo, leading Zimbabwe to chase down 179 runs and secure their spot in the next round. He formed two vital partnerships, putting together 69 runs first with Tadiwanashe Marumani and then with captain Sikandar Raza, helping to carry the team across the finish line.

What’s more, he’s still unbeaten in the tournament, having scored 48 against Oman and 64 against Australia. With a total of 175 runs in just three innings, he has been the backbone of Zimbabwe’s undefeated group-stage campaign, which featured victories over Oman, Australia, and Sri Lanka, while their match against Ireland was rained out. Now, Zimbabwe is set to take on West Indies, India, and South Africa in the Super Eights.
