T20 World Cup 2026: Bangladesh firm on not playing in India
The uncertainty surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup has intensified after the country’s government sports advisor reiterated that Dhaka is not prepared to change its stance, following what it believes was unfair treatment by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Addressing the media, the sports advisor, Asif Nazrul, made it clear that the matter now goes beyond cricket administration and falls under the government’s jurisdiction. He also stated that the BCB has not been granted justice by the governing body.
“I think we did not get justice from ICC. Whether we play in the World Cup or not is entirely a government decision,” he stated.
The comments underline the growing tension between the Bangladesh authorities and the ICC, with officials feeling aggrieved over decisions taken by the global body. While the exact point of contention has not been elaborated in detail publicly, the firm language suggests dissatisfaction serious enough to potentially impact Bangladesh’s presence at the marquee tournament.
The advisor also indicated that the government is in no hurry to reverse its position, signalling that diplomatic or administrative discussions are still ongoing behind closed doors.
Bangladesh’s possible absence from the T20 World Cup would be a significant development, with Scotland potentially taking their spot in Group C of the marquee event. As things stand, the ball is firmly in the government’s court with no immediate softening of stance.
The Bangladesh team players reportedly held a meeting with the Bangladesh Cricket Board president, Aminul Islam, and Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul. The players cited their willingness to participate in the upcoming World Cup.
Players present at the meeting included Nurul Hasan, Shamim Hossain, Hasan Mahmud, and Nazmul Hossain Shanto. The meeting was called to take a call on the Bangla Tigers’ participation in the event, which has been subject to speculation.
As per the schedule, Bangladesh are scheduled to face the West Indies in their opening encounter of the at the Eden Gardens on February 7.
