It can identify three life-threatening heart conditions-heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF), and valvular heart disease (VHD)-in as little as 15 seconds.

Unlike a traditional stethoscope that only captures sound, the AI version combines sound recordings with a quick ECG (electrocardiogram). This allows it to detect tiny, almost invisible changes in heart rhythm and blood flow that a human ear might miss.



Pocket-Sized, Yet Powerful

The device is about the size of a playing card but packs advanced technology. Developed by researchers at Imperial College London and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, it was introduced as part of the TRICORDER study in the UK.

The AI stethoscope connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone app, where results are instantly displayed. Using Wi-Fi or mobile data, it sends information to the cloud, where AI algorithms process the data. These algorithms, managed and regulated by the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), have shown high and consistent performance across international studies.

How the AI Stethoscope Works


Using the device is simple. The doctor places it on the patient’s chest, where it records:


  • Electrical signals from the heart (ECG)

  • Heart sounds and blood flow through its microphone

This combined data is sent securely to the cloud. AI algorithms, trained on tens of thousands of patient cases, analyze the patterns. The system can detect early signs of heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or valve disease that might otherwise go unnoticed. Within seconds, the results are sent back to the doctor’s smartphone, highlighting whether the patient is at risk.

Real-World Impact Backed by Research


The British Heart Foundation, which partly funded the research, has reported impressive results. People examined using the AI stethoscope were found to be:


  • 2.33 times more likely to be diagnosed with heart failure

  • 3.45 times more likely to be diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, and

  • 1.92 times more likely to be diagnosed with heart valve disease within the next 12 months

The study, published in the BMJ Open journal, shows that AI is not just an experimental concept but a real-world tool with measurable impact.
