Amazon's God of War TV series casts Freya - Here's where you know her from
Amazon’s God of War TV show adaptation has found yet another cast member, and it’s a pretty big one. Freya, the goddess that assists Kratos and Atreus throughout most of the first game, and teams up with the duo in Ragnarok, will be played by Sonya Walger, as announced in a report via Deadline.
In both Norse mythology and the God of War games, Freya is the goddess of love and magic. She's the former wife of Odin, and the mother of Baldur who serves as the main villain in the events of the first game.
Here’s the full description of her character, as reported by Variety : “[Freya is] a Vanir goddess and princess who practices powerful, ancient magic. She is also Odin’s (Patinkin) ex-wife and the former Queen of the Valkyries in Asgard, a title bestowed upon her on her marriage day.

“She is strong, insightful, and filled with regrets. When Freya’s unhappy marriage to Odin ended with her being exiled, she was cut off from her family, as well as her native land, Vanaheim. Freya has lived alone in Midgard for a century, a recluse in a hidden glade, feared by humans, and often referred to as the Witch of the Woods.”
Walger joins the cast alongside plenty of other heavy-hitting names, including Ryan Hurst as Kratos, Callum Vinson as Atreus, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor and Mandy Patinkin as Odin.
Walger is best known for her role as Penny in Lost. More recently, she’s appeared in For All Mankind as Molly Cobb, and Get Shorty as Lila Llambias.
Amazon’s God of War TV show is currently in production with the studio only publishing a single still image of what to expect so far. The image didn’t go down well among fans, although Kratos actor Hurst encouraged fans: ‘don't believe everything you see on the internet, kids’.
It’s currently unclear how Amazon will adapt the events of Sony Santa Monica’s games. The 2018 title doesn’t feature Odin at all, with a meagre cameo of Thor in a post credit scene.
However, the studio has already cast plenty of characters that appear during the events of 2022’s Ragnarok, indicating that there may be some overlap between game events in the first season.
Amazon has commissioned the series for two seasons with Frederick E.O. Toye of Fallout, The Boys and Shogun fame tied to direct the first two episodes.
