Sent an Email by Mistake? Here’s How You Can Recall It Before Anyone Reads It

Sending an email to the wrong person or noticing a mistake right after hitting send is something most people have experienced. The good news is that popular email platforms now offer a short window to undo or recall messages before they are fully delivered.

Professionals send a large number of emails daily, and even a small slip can lead to confusion or embarrassment. Knowing how the unsend feature works on different platforms can help you avoid that.

How to Unsend an Email on Gmail

Gmail offers a simple and effective “Undo Send” feature.

By default, users get five seconds after clicking send to undo the email. A small notification appears at the bottom of the screen with an “Undo” option.

You can extend this time window up to 30 seconds by going to Settings, selecting “See all settings,” and adjusting the Undo Send duration under the General tab.

This feature works by delaying the email slightly, giving you a brief chance to cancel it before it is actually sent.

How Email Recall Works on Microsoft Outlook

Outlook handles things differently.

A recall is only possible if both the sender and the recipient are using Microsoft 365 work or school accounts within the same organisation. It will also only work if the recipient has not opened the email.

Personal email accounts such as Gmail or Outlook.com do not support recall.

For newer versions of Outlook on Windows, users can enable an “Undo Send” feature through Settings, then Mail, then Compose and reply. The cancellation window can be set to 5 or 10 seconds.

If the conditions are not met, the recall attempt will fail.

How to Unsend Emails on Apple Mail

Apple Mail also provides an “Undo Send” feature for users on macOS Ventura and later, as well as iOS 16 and above.

By default, users have 10 seconds to undo a sent email. This can be adjusted to 20 or 30 seconds through Mail settings under the Composing section.

After sending an email, you can click “Undo Send” within the time limit to bring the message back to draft mode.

What Happens If Email Recall Fails

Not every recall attempt is successful.

A recall will fail if the recipient has already opened the message, if they are using a different email service such as Gmail or Yahoo, or if the email has been moved out of the inbox by rules.

Some platforms, like Yahoo Mail, do not offer any recall or unsend feature at all. Once the email is sent, it is delivered permanently.

If the recall does not work, the best approach is to send a follow-up email. Keep it clear and polite, and correct the earlier message.

Why You Should Not Rely Only on Unsend Features

While these tools can be helpful, they are limited by very short time windows.

Most “unsend” features work by delaying the email rather than actually pulling it back after delivery. Once the time window closes, the message is out of your control.

The safest approach is prevention. Double-check recipients, review attachments, and consider enabling longer send delays in your settings.
