Instagram has introduced a new map feature that lets users share their real-time location with selected friends while also browsing location-tagged posts from friends and favourite creators. Part of Meta’s latest feature rollout, the tool aims to make it easier for people to stay connected and discover content in new ways while raising questions about user privacy.

According to Meta’s blog post, users must actively opt in to share their last active location with chosen friends. The feature can be turned off at any time, offering flexibility and control.

"You can also open the map to see content your friends and favorite creators are posting from interesting or fun locations," said Meta.

"No matter how you use the map, you and your friends have a new, lightweight way to connect with each other."

What the Instagram Map Shows

Any content tagged with a location whether Reels, posts, or Stories from people you follow can appear on the map. These items will remain visible for 24 hours after posting.

Meta has confirmed that location sharing is disabled by default. If you choose to enable it, you’ll have the ability to customise your sharing settings.

Key Privacy and Control Options

Meta outlined several key settings for users:

  • Choose who can see your location: Friends (followers you follow back), Close Friends, selected individuals, or no one at all.
  • Block location sharing for specific places or certain people.
  • Location updates happen whenever you open Instagram or return to the app if it’s running in the background.
  • Parents who have supervision enabled for teenagers will receive a notification if the teen begins sharing their location.

“Regardless of whether you choose to share your location, you can use the map to explore location-based content,” Meta explained.

How to Access and Use Instagram’s Map Feature

  1. Locate the Map – Find the map icon at the top of your Direct Messages inbox.
  2. Opt-In for Sharing – Enable location sharing and set custom privacy controls.
  3. Explore Content – View location-tagged posts from your friends and creators in your network.

Balancing Discovery and Privacy

This update offers an innovative way to connect through location-based experiences while still maintaining control over personal privacy. By setting boundaries and adjusting preferences, users can enjoy richer interactions without compromising safety.
