Is Rainbow Six Siege still down? Servers go offline after huge Ubisoft hack
The Christmas holidays have been nothing short of a nightmare for Rainbow Six Siege players after the game's servers went offline after a massive systems breach over the weekend. Hackers reportedly brought Ubisoft's biggest multiplayer title to a halt, giving away in-game currency worth well over $13 million in real-world value.
Ubisoft was first made aware of the issue after videos and images surfaced on social media with gamers revealing how they'd randomly received rare items, along with an extra two billion R6 Credits in their accounts. Popular content creator King George shared on X: "Seems like R6 is completely f*****, it's unreal how bad. Hackers have done the following: banned and unbanned thousands of people, taken over the ban feed, gave everyone 2 billion credits and renown, and gave everyone every skin including dev skins."
Ubisoft first acknowledged the attack on the morning of Saturday, December 27. The official Rainbow Six Siege account said it was "aware of an incident" and was "working on a solution".
Less than two hours later, it announced that both Rainbow Six Siege and its Marketplace, the official platform used by gamers to trade in-game items, had been shut down.
The game would remain offline for well over 24 hours with a second update posted on Sunday, December 28, confirming developers were in the process of rolling back the game to its previous state after conducting "extensive quality control tests".
To the relief of Siege fans, Ubisoft declared the game open for business later in the evening, yet players are still reporting outages across various platforms.
According to Down Detector, the number of outages plummeted around midnight on Monday, December 29, and would fall to more manageable levels at around 5am.
But there would be a slight surge in players reporting issues accessing Rainbow Six at 9am, but nothing close to what has transpired over the last few days.
According to Ubisoft, the game is online, but players may experience queues.
"Our live tests are now complete and we are opening the game to all players," Ubisoft explains. "Please note that you may experience a queue when connecting, as our services ramp up."
