Microsoft is removing Edge browser's AI feature it added last year: What is changing
Microsoft is removing a key AI-driven feature from its Microsoft Edge browser as part of efforts to simplify the user experience. The company has confirmed that the Sidebar, which was introduced as a hub for AI tools and quick access features in Microsoft Edge, is being phased out. The change, spotted in recent builds and support documentation, marks a shift in Microsoft’s approach to Edge, which has added multiple features over time. While the company has not detailed all upcoming changes, the move signals an attempt to reduce complexity and streamline the browser interface. However, the company has confirmed that Copilot will not be affected by the change.
In its support document, Microsoft wrote, “Sidebar app list is being retired
We’re simplifying Microsoft Edge. The sidebar app list will be retired in the near future, starting with Microsoft account (MSA) users. There is no confirmed retirement date at this time.
New apps can no longer be added to the sidebar, and apps currently pinned in the app tower will be removed in a future update.
Copilot is not affected by this change, and we’re continuing to improve and enhance it.”
What is Microsoft Edge's Sidebar feature and what it's removal means for users
Microsoft Edge’s Sidebar feature allows users to pin web apps like Outlook, Bing, and shopping tools into a side panel for quick access without switching tabs. It works as a mini app hub within the browser, offering a more integrated multitasking experience compared to traditional tab-based browsing.
However, Microsoft has now confirmed that it's phasing out the feature as part of efforts to simplify Edge. This means users won’t be able to add new apps to the Sidebar, although previously added apps will continue to work for a limited time.
According to a Windows Latest report, Edge’s Sidebar is currently working but it is set to disappear soon. The report noted that users who tried to access the Sidebar are seeing a new alert display inside the browser which read: “We’re simplifying Edge. New apps can no longer be added, and the quick access list will be removed gradually in future updates. Copilot is not affected—this helps us focus on making it even better."
Once fully removed, users will lose the ability to access pinned web apps within the Sidebar and will need to switch tabs instead. The change does not impact Copilot, which will continue to be available separately within the browser.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella confirmed that company isn’t ignoring Edge
During Microsoft’s Q3 earnings call, CEO Satya Nadella said that the company is working to improve engagement across its consumer products, including Windows, Xbox, Bing, and Microsoft Edge.
He said, “When it comes to our consumer business, we are doing the foundational work required to win back fans and strengthen engagement across Windows, Xbox, Bing, and Edge… In the near term, we are focused on fundamentals, prioritizing quality and serving our core users better.”
The company also noted that Edge has gained market share for 20 consecutive quarters, while Bing reached 1 billion monthly active users.
