Some Kindles will be blocked from new books this month, is yours on the list?
Kindle fans may need to brace themselves, as some trusty e-readers are about to be blocked from downloading any new books. Amazon announced this change back in April, confirming that a bunch of Kindles will lose access to the Kindle Store from May 20, 2026. So who will be affected by this update? Classic devices like the Kindle 5 and the first-ever Kindle Paperwhite are all on this list, along with any other Kindle that dates back to 2012 or earlier.
HERE ARE ALL THE MODELS AFFECTED
Kindle 1st Generation (2007), Kindle DX and DX Graphite(2009 and 2010), Kindle Keyboard (2010), Kindle 4 (2011), Kindle Touch (2011), Kindle 5 (2012), and Kindle Paperwhite 1st Generation(2012).
If you have one of these digital books don't panic just yet-you won't lose anything you already own. Your library stays put. But once the deadline hits, your device becomes a "read-only" gadget as no new titles or fresh downloads can be added.
"Starting May 20, 2026, customers using Kindle and Kindle Fire devices released in 2012 and earlier will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store," Amazon told Express.co.uk.
"These models have been supported for at least 14 years-some as long as 18 years-but technology has come a long way in that time, and these devices will no longer be supported moving forward."
Amazon is in the middle of informing customers who have Kindles affected by the block.
To help ease the transition, the company is offering 20 percent off select new Kindle devices as well as a £15 eBook credit.
If your Kindle is on the list above, now might be a good time to grab something far superior such as the latest Kindle Scribe Colorsoft or
Although this update is bad for those with older Kindles, there is better news for anyone who has splashed out on a newer model.
Amazon has announced that it is rolling out a big software boost to a duo of devices, which will add a slew of new features for free. The changes will affect those using the more premium Kindle Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft, which both feature more immersive colour displays.
The update includes a new Dark Mode and improved note taking. Full deatails can be found here.
