The new earbuds from Beats and Nike won't be around for long
If you were thinking of upgrading your wireless earbuds and you like the idea of having a pair that stand out, the new Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 Nike Special Edition could be the answer.
It takes the Powerbeats Pro 2 released last year and reshells them with an eye-catching lime green hue and the famous Nike Swoosh on the right bud, but otherwise these are the Beats I reviewed favourably twelve months ago.
It's the first ever hardware collaboration between Nike and Apple-owned Beats, expanding on Apple's close partnership with Nike with Apple Watch straps and software. The 'Volt' colourway pairs with black on the buds as well as on the charging case, which is black and speckled with a paint splatter effect.
Nike's famous 'Just Do It' slogan is printed in the lid of the case when you flip it up, and the brands have gone to the trouble of kitting out basketball legend (and Nike ambassador) in the new buds in a golf-themed photo shoot and campaign ad.
If you already have a pair of Powerbeats Pro 2, don't worry, this new Nike branded pair doesn't have any features or upgrades that your pair doesn't have. They'll just be harder to get hold of eventually, as they are a limited edition. When they're sold out, that's it.
The new pair even costs the same in the UK at £249.99. You can buy them from the Apple website from Friday, March 20.
So it's just a new colourway, basically. Despite what Beats will tell you.
"This isn't just a new colourway; it's a collision of two brands that define performance, culture, and sports-the attributes of today's athlete," said Chris Thorne, CMO of Beats. "By placing the Swoosh on our hardware for the first time, we're honouring the shared DNA of Beats and Nike-and celebrating ambassadors like LeBron James who embody both. It's a tribute to the grit, style, and sound that push people to their limits."
If you prefer a more subtle look and feel, Beats also makes the fitness-focussed Powerbeats Fit, which have similar performance to the Powerbeats but come with a wingtip design to keep them in your ear rather than a hook.
