A new buzzword — Vibe Coding — is rapidly gaining traction in the global tech ecosystem, with industry leaders like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu weighing in on its implications. The concept reflects a broader shift in how software is being created in the age of artificial intelligence.
What Is Vibe Coding?Vibe Coding refers to an emerging approach to software development where users rely on artificial intelligence to generate code using simple, natural language instructions.
Instead of manually writing complex code in languages like Python or JavaScript, users can describe what they want — such as building an app, feature, or function — and AI tools powered by large language models (LLMs) generate the required code.
The idea is to make coding:

- Less dependent on deep programming expertise
However, effective results still depend on how clearly and precisely users communicate their requirements through prompts.
The term Vibe Coding was coined in February 2025 by OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Karpathy described it as a new style of programming where developers “embrace exponentials and forget there’s even code,” highlighting how powerful AI models are transforming the coding experience.
The concept quickly gained momentum alongside the rise of AI coding tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Replit, and CodeWhisperer.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has welcomed the trend, describing it as a positive evolution in software development.
Speaking on the Google for Developers podcast, he noted that Vibe Coding is:
- Making coding more enjoyable
- Lowering barriers to entry
- Reigniting excitement among developers
He also expressed optimism that the technology will continue to improve, further enhancing productivity and creativity.
Sridhar Vembu’s PerspectiveNot everyone is fully convinced. Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu offered a more cautious take, suggesting that Vibe Coding may oversimplify a fundamentally complex discipline.
In his remarks, Vembu emphasised that:
- Coding has always involved layers of abstraction
- What appears “simple” is often deeply complex underneath
- AI-generated code should not obscure the need for understanding systems
His comments highlight a broader concern in the industry — that excessive reliance on AI could reduce foundational knowledge among developers.
Vibe Coding represents a significant shift toward AI-assisted development, where humans collaborate with machines rather than write every line of code themselves.
While proponents see it as a democratizing force that opens coding to a wider audience, critics warn of overdependence and the risks of treating software development as a “black box.”
