WhatsApp, the instant messaging platform used by billions worldwide, continues to evolve to make communication simpler and more organised. While the app does have a minimal-looking chat interface, keeping up with conversations in an active group or even personal chats can sometimes be overwhelming. To solve this, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will bring threaded conversations to the platform.

Report from WABetaInfo

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is testing a feature that will help organise message replies into threaded conversations. This is aimed at making it easier for users to keep track of replies and engage more effectively, especially in busy group chats. The feature is being tested on the beta version of WhatsApp for Android and is already visible to some beta testers.

What Threaded Conversations Mean

The new threaded conversations feature is designed to arrange replies under a specific message, so they no longer get lost in the clutter of ongoing chats. This system will help people find the relevant reply without scrolling endlessly through older messages, a problem that has been common in large groups.

How the New Feature Works

As described, "some beta testers are now seeing a redesigned reply system where a response to a text automatically generates a new thread under the original message." When users open a thread, they will be able to see a complete overview of all replies connected to that message. Additionally, they can add their own responses, keeping the conversation neatly organised.

Labelled as Follow Up Replies

Interestingly, when someone replies in a thread, WhatsApp marks it differently. "This reply will be marked as a 'Follow up reply', but the label won't be visible to all users who are currently getting the feature." This ensures that the system distinguishes threaded responses while keeping the chat experience smooth for everyone.

Improved Group Chat Experience

The feature is particularly useful in groups where dozens of messages are exchanged in a short span. With threading, users can directly jump into the part of the discussion they care about, rather than scanning through multiple unrelated texts. As a result, conversations become easier to follow, and meaningful exchanges are less likely to be missed.

Limitations of the Current Beta

One thing to note is that threads are only created for messages that have the feature enabled. "Also, threads are only created for messages that have the feature enabled, which means not all conversations will be neatly arranged by default." Additionally, older replies made before the thread was created won’t automatically be part of it. However, WhatsApp plans to structure them within the thread so that the context is preserved.

Feature Availability on Beta

The new threaded conversations feature is currently available on the latest version of WhatsApp beta for Android, which can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. This limited rollout allows WhatsApp to test how the feature functions in real-world use before introducing it widely.

Expected Rollout Timeline

Since the feature is still in testing, its availability to the general public might take some time. "Since the feature is currently in the testing phase and limited to beta users, it may take anywhere between a few weeks to months before it rolls out to the general public." This is typical for WhatsApp updates, as the platform prioritises stability and performance.
