WhatsApp Is Rolling Out Threaded Replies for Chats; Here’s What You Need to Know

WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging apps, is used by billions to stay connected with friends, family, and colleagues. While its simple chat design keeps things clean, following conversations especially in active group chats can quickly become confusing.
To address this, WhatsApp is testing a new threaded replies feature that will group message replies under the original message. This makes it easier for users to track conversations, catch up on discussions, and respond without losing context.
The feature is currently being rolled out to beta testers on the latest version of WhatsApp for Android, available through the Google Play Store. Some testers are already seeing a redesigned reply system where tapping “reply” creates a new thread linked to the original message.
Inside the thread, users can view all replies in one place and contribute further messages. These follow-up replies are marked as “Follow up reply,” though this label may not be visible to all users during the testing phase.
This improvement is particularly useful for group chats where multiple discussions happen at once. Users can easily jump into specific conversations without searching for past replies or trying to remember which message someone was responding to.
However, threads are only created for messages that have the feature enabled, so not every conversation will be threaded by default. Also, replies sent before the thread was created won’t automatically be part of it but WhatsApp will group them into the thread so the conversation stays organized for everyone involved.
Since it’s still in testing, the threaded replies feature might take a few weeks or even months before it’s available to all users. Once it’s officially launched, it’s expected to bring a major improvement to how people chat and engage on WhatsApp, especially in fast-paced group conversations.
