CDS General Anil Chauhan Says All Services On The Same Page On Theatre Command

India’s armed forces are preparing for a landmark reform with the introduction of integrated theatre commands. Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan announced that discussions under “Operation Tiranga” are complete, with a final report expected soon. The proposal will then move to the Ministry of Defence and the Cabinet Committee on Security for approval. Three theatre commands are planned: Pakistan front (Jaipur, air force-led), China front (Lucknow, army-led), and Maritime front (Thiruvananthapuram, Navy-led). These commands will unify the Army, Navy, and Air Force under single commanders, replacing the current 17 commands. The aim is to enhance combat effectiveness, reduce decision-making time, and ensure faster responses to contingencies. Joint commands will also allow better resource allocation, minimize duplication in logistics, and improve efficiency. If approved, this theatre command system will mark the most significant defence reform in independent India’s history, reshaping military strategy and operations.
