Centre Pushes PNG: LPG Supply May Be Stopped Where Pipelines Are Available
The Centre has launched a policy to boost piped natural gas (PNG) networks, curbing LPG supply to households in areas where PNG infrastructure exists. This initiative comes amid global oil supply disruptions due to the Middle East crisis and promotes PNG as a reliable, continuous alternative for homes and businesses, eliminating frequent cylinder refills. The move is formalised through the Natural Gas and Petroleum Products Distribution Order, 2026, issued under the Essential Commodities Act. It streamlines pipeline project approvals with time-bound clearances, standardised charges, and simplified procedures. Oil Secretary Neeraj Mittal called the reforms a way to turn the ongoing crisis into an opportunity, enhancing ease of doing business and energy security.
