DRDO Begins Work On Next-Generation Missile To Replace Prithvi Series : Reports
India is preparing for a significant shift in its tactical missile capabilities, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) initiating work on a next-generation system to replace the ageing Prithvi series. The Prithvi missiles, inducted in the 1990s, rely on liquid-fuel propulsion — a technology that, while effective in its time, presents limitations in modern warfare. Liquid-fuel systems require extensive pre-launch preparation, including fueling processes that are both time-consuming and operationally risky. In fast-paced conflict scenarios, this reduces responsiveness and increases vulnerability to pre-emptive strikes. The upcoming missile is expected to address these challenges through a solid-fuel, canisterised design. This would allow the system to remain stored, transported, and ready for launch with minimal preparation enabling rapid “shoot-and-scoot” operations and significantly improving survivability on the battlefield.
