Why is Chand Baori special?

What Is Special About Chand Baori Stepwell: Rajasthan is known worldwide for its grand architecture, its forts, palaces, and temples are its identity. But amidst these famous places, there are some amazing places that are still away from the eyes of the people. One such unique wonder is Chand Baori, which was recently brought back into the limelight by industrialist Anand Mahindra. In his post, Anand Mahindra described this ancient stepwell as not just a monument, but a thought carved in stone. He says that while people are attracted to the famous tourist places of Rajasthan, this place has a distinct identity due to its geometric beauty and design.

1000 year old amazing construction

Located in the village of Abhaneri, Chand Baori was built in the 8th-9th century by King Chanda of the Nikumbh dynasty. Approximately 30 meters deep, this stepwell spans 13 floors and has approximately 3,500 steps, built in perfect symmetry. The structure is striking at first sight. Its most striking feature is its design. When viewed from above, the pattern of the steps resembles an inverted pyramid, creating an optical illusion that captivates visitors.

Not just beauty, but also utility

Chand Baori wasn't built just for the sake of spectacle; it served as a highly useful structure. Water scarcity has always been a major problem in Rajasthan's hot and dry climate . This stepwell served as an important means of rainwater harvesting, allowing water to be stored and used for long periods of time. Furthermore, its depth and structure helped cool the surrounding temperature. Thus, this site served not only as a water reservoir but also as a climate balancer.

There is also a connection with films.

Chand Baori's beauty isn't limited to tourists, but it has also captivated the film world. The site has appeared in the Bollywood films Paheli and Bhool Bhulaiyaa. It has also been featured in the Hollywood films The Dark Knight Rises and The Fall.

How to reach here?

Located approximately 90 kilometers from Jaipur, this stepwell is easily accessible by road. Nearby is the Harshat Mata Temple, where visitors would often visit the stepwell before offering prayers. Chand Baori is not just a historical site, but a magnificent example of the thinking and engineering of that era. A hidden treasure that is now being rediscovered.
