Income Tax Refund Update: 95% Refund Claims Processed, Only Select Cases Face Delays—Here's Why

Newspoint

The Income Tax Department has clarified that delays in refunds are limited to a small number of cases, while the vast majority of taxpayers have already received their dues. According to official data from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), more than 95% of income tax refund claims for the current financial year have been successfully processed.

Despite concerns among some taxpayers, authorities have emphasized that refunds have not been deliberately withheld. Instead, a combination of structural tax changes, improved data analytics, and increased adoption of the new tax regime has resulted in a lower overall refund amount this year.

Total Refunds Lower Compared to Last Year

As of January 11

, the total income tax refunds issued stood at ₹3.11 lakh crore, which is nearly 17% lower than the ₹3.75 lakh crore refunded during the same period last year. Senior tax officials explained that this decline does not indicate inefficiency or delay by the department.

One of the main reasons behind this drop is a shift in how taxes are deducted and calculated, reducing the need for refunds after filing returns.

Why Some Refunds Are Still on Hold

Tax authorities revealed that automated data verification systems

flagged discrepancies in certain income tax returns. These mismatches triggered a more detailed review before refunds could be released.

In such cases, taxpayers were asked to revise or correct their returns. The department also conducted targeted compliance drives, encouraging taxpayers to voluntarily rectify errors. Over the last two years, these initiatives resulted in additional tax collections of ₹9,640 crore

, highlighting the effectiveness of data-driven scrutiny.

Advanced Analytics Changed the Refund Process

Unlike earlier years, the department now relies heavily on analytics-based assessments rather than random checks. This means refunds are issued only after ensuring income, deductions, and disclosures match available data.

Officials clarified that refunds are being held only in cases requiring further verification, and there has been no disruption in the refund processing system overall.

TDS Reforms Reduced Excess Tax Deductions

Another key factor behind fewer refunds is the government’s effort to rationalize TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) provisions

. With more accurate TDS deductions during the year, taxpayers no longer overpay taxes and hence do not need large refunds after filing returns.

This change has helped reduce the post-filing refund dependency that was common earlier.

New Tax Regime Gaining Popularity

A significant shift toward the new income tax regime has also contributed to lower refunds. Data shows that nearly 88% of taxpayers filing ITR-1 to ITR-4

opted for the new regime this year.

Since the new regime does not allow most exemptions and deductions, tax calculations are more straightforward, resulting in fewer refund claims. Lower tax rates and simpler compliance have made it increasingly attractive to salaried individuals, professionals, investors, and small businesses.

Refunds Not Stopped, Just Smarter Processing

Tax officials reiterated that refund processing remains smooth and timely. Only a limited number of cases are under review due to inconsistencies or compliance requirements.

For most taxpayers, refunds have already been credited, and for the remaining few, resolution depends on correcting mismatches or completing verification.
