Trump's Shift in Tone Ahead of Key Meeting with Xi Jinping
Is a new era of friendship about to unfold between the world's two largest powers? Ahead of a high-profile meeting in Beijing, President Donald Trump has noticeably softened his tone. He not only praised Chinese President Xi Jinping but also referred to him as a remarkable individual. During a discussion in the Oval Office, Trump remarked on the depth of his relationship with Xi, stating, 'He is a fantastic person, and we get along very well. You can see how we are working together.' He emphasized the significant trade between the US and China, claiming, 'To be honest, we are making a lot of money.'
This statement comes just before the scheduled meeting between the two leaders on May 14 and 15. However, the conversation isn't limited to trade alone; Trump also commended China's respectful approach.
Trump acknowledged China's role in international tensions, particularly regarding Iran and oil supply issues. He noted that China sources 60% of its oil from the Strait of Hormuz, yet has never attempted to challenge the US. In his characteristic style, Trump stated, 'China does not challenge us. They know that as long as I am here, they will not.' He highlighted that China has always shown respect towards the US.
Interestingly, Trump also offered a unique suggestion to China, stating that they should not rely solely on traditional routes for their oil supply. According to him, Chinese vessels should consider coming to ports in Texas, Louisiana, and Alaska.
He emphasized that Alaska is actually very close to Asian countries, a fact that many overlook. Trump's conciliatory stance could be a strategic move ahead of the Beijing talks, as he attempts to create a positive atmosphere for dialogue amidst the ongoing trade war.
