Renowned filmmaker Dr Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar has said that art, literature and culture alone have the power to unite society at a time when the world is gripped by war, unrest and instability.

He was speaking at the 35th “Sandesha Award 2026” presentation ceremony organised by the Sandesha Culture and Education Foundation at the Sandesha campus on Wednesday.

Dr Chandrashekhar said the world today is driven by profit motives and imperial ambitions, creating fear and uncertainty. “What the world needs today is harmony, inclusiveness and a secular social system. Only then can people live in peace,” he said.

Recalling that he had received the Sandesha Award in 1998 for the film America America, he said it gave him immense happiness to return to the same platform when America America – Part 2 is set for release soon.

Mangaluru Diocese Bishop Emeritus Dr Peter Paul Saldanha was present at the event. The programme was presided over by Foundation president Rev Dr Henry D’Souza. Several literary, cultural and academic personalities were in attendance. Sandesha special awards were also presented to individuals and institutions for their contributions in various fields.
