Despite being aware of unauthorised tourism activities earlier, departments had not taken effective action so far. Many members of the public believe this negligence also contributed to the boat tragedy. Locals have now demanded strict action against those operating illegally.

Illegal homestays under scanner

There are several illegal homestays along the coastal belt and at the foothills of the Western Ghats. These establishments are accused of harming the environment and conducting unauthorised adventure activities. There is growing demand for the administration to take firm action against them as well.

Video sparks criticism

A video showing district in-charge minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K., and other officials travelling to St. Mary’s Island on January 26 without wearing life jackets has gone viral. The video has drawn criticism, with people questioning how officials can insist on public safety rules when they themselves do not follow them.

Life jacket rules to be enforced strictly

At a meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on January 27, officials discussed that, as per rules, every boat must provide life jackets to all passengers and ensure they are worn during emergencies. The district administration is now considering stricter measures, including making it mandatory to wear life jackets throughout the boat journey and imposing fines on violators.

Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said awareness and warning messages will be issued to all boat owners and the public.

Meeting with boat operators

A meeting of water sports operators, tourist boat owners, and kayaking operators was held at the Malpe Coastal Security Police Station under the chairmanship of the Deputy Superintendent of Police. Around 40 boat owners attended. They were instructed to carry out all activities only after completing proper documentation and registrations.

Demand to curb corruption

Complaints have also emerged alleging corruption at the official level. It is alleged that some officers ignore violations during new registrations or renewals despite being aware of irregularities, possibly due to undue benefits. There is a strong demand that such corruption within departments must be stopped first.
