According to this verse, if an individual lacks any understanding of—or fails to make decisions regarding—*Dharma* (morality), *Artha* (wealth), *Kama* (desires), and *Moksha* (liberation), then their cycle of birth and death is entirely in vain. The life of such a person is reduced to nothing more than a repetitive cycle of being born and dying.

According to Chanakya, the life of a person who lacks an understanding of these four fundamental principles is devoid of purpose. In other words, an individual whose life lacks proper goals or noble aims—despite being born as a human—is essentially living a life no different from that of an animal.
