Chanel Found Its Cool Factor In Diljit Dosanjh, Not The Other Way Around

Diljit appearing on the Jimmy Fallon show was not just a stoic moment in pop culture, but also a very important fashion moment in modern history. He is one of the few global icons who have never followed fashion rules, but rather always made his own. So, when I saw Diljit Dosanjh appear on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, my first thought was that his wasn’t about Diljit stepping into Chanel, but it was about Chanel stepping into Diljit’s world.

Diljit’s visual identity is extremely instinctive and has never looked or felt constructed. Be it his regular tours or his Met Gala debut, he has never really chased validation from fashion houses. His style is a refreshing sight punctuated with a mix of Punjabi cultural markers, his turban, his silhouettes, his ease. Blend these with any contemporary streetwear brand of a luxury one, and you have a style as unique as Diljit himself.

Diljit's Chanel coord set had the brand’s signature code, the structured tailoring, clean lines, and a restrained colour palette. The jacket has a gorgeous subtle detailing which carries the quiet authority that Chanel holds, and the pants complement it beautifully. The highlight of the look was the Chanel watch though. Diljit casually sported the Chanel Premiere Edition Originale watch, which is priced at around Rs 5. 72 lakhs.

The steel watch comes with an 18-carat gold plated link bracelet.

The ‘lewk’ spelled classy in a font that is not found on my laptop. No exaggerated display of wealth, just a subtle extension of the bran’s design philosophy. This look signals a broader shift in the current landscape of global celebrity fashion.

Incase it was not obvious, Diljit Dosanjh didn’t need Chanel to appear relevant on Fallon. If anything, the association worked both ways. The biggest take away from this is the fact that when a celebrity’s personal style is defined, even the most established names in fashion don’t overshadow it, they simply become part of it.
