Chelsea have already banked huge £24m windfall and could earn more next week

Chelsea - bar a bizarre turn of events - need to win next week against Napoli if they are to secure a top-eight finish in the Champions League league phase.

The Blues just about got the job done against a resilient Pafos side at Stamford Bridge. A 78th-minute header from Moises Caicedo turned out to be the only goal of the game, meaning the west Londoners go into next week's trip to Naples with it all to play for in their European adventure.

Going into the final matchday of the league phase, Chelsea occupy eighth place. There are five teams below the Blues on goal difference. Barcelona are just one goal behind Liam Rosenior's side in that metric, with Hansi Flick's team taking on Copenhagen at home next Wednesday.

Even a win for Chelsea in Naples might not be enough for them to qualify automatically through the top eight. And that could have see the Blues miss out on a big chunk of money from UEFA.

If Chelsea were to finish in the top eight and advance into the knockout stages of the competition, they would earn £9.5million for their efforts. If, however, the Blues were forced into the play-offs, they would receive £871,000 instead.

Each win in this phase of the Champions League is worth £1.8million, while a draw will see a club earn £610,000. Before the league phase even started, Chelsea pocketed a fixed payment of £16.2million for just reaching that stage of Europe's elite competition. In the league phase, the Blues have won four times - meaning from that alone, they have accumulated £7.2million. The one draw - against Qarabag in November - gifted the west Londoners a further £610,000.

If Chelsea are able to get the three points in Italy next week and qualify in the top eight, it could earn the club even more money. Eighth-place receives £6.9million, seventh gets £7.14million and sixth will take home £7.38million.

The highest Chelsea can finish is in third, though that seems very unlikely and would need a number of things to go the Blues' way. Third-place in the league phase will receive an extra £8.09million, while fourth will take £7.85million and fifth gets £7.62million.

Rosenior, who made his managerial debut in the Champions League on Wednesday evening, is fully aware of the challenge that awaits his Chelsea side in Naples next week. Though Rosenior is not daunted by the task ahead and coming up against the "incredible" Antonio Conte.

"I think this club has never been daunted about any fixture," said Rosenior after the win over Pafos. "We know it will be a difficult game. Antonio is an incredible coach. But yeah, I'm not daunted by that prospect at all.

"They [Napoli] have to win, which changes the dynamic of the game a little bit. But my focus now is on Crystal Palace. Honestly, I've spoken to the players about how important the next game is. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it."
