The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab announced a new scheme for women on Sunday. Under this scheme, women will receive Rs. 1,000 per month, while women from the Scheduled Caste (SC) category will receive a monthly assistance of Rs. 1,500. Providing monthly assistance of Rs. 1,000 to women was a key election promise of the ruling party ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections.
Announcement of the New Scheme
Presenting the state budget for 2026-27 in the Assembly, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema announced the implementation of the "Mukhyamantri Mawan Dhiyaan Satkar Yojana" (Chief Minister Mother-Daughter Felicitation Scheme). Under this scheme, the government will transfer funds directly to women's accounts.
The Bhagwant Mann government has launched this new scheme nearly four years after coming to power in Punjab. Cheema said that the government will transfer Rs. 1,500 every month to the accounts of women from the SC community. This announcement was made on the occasion of International Women's Day.
Which women will receive financial assistance?
This is the first time the state budget has been presented on a Sunday. The Finance Minister described the scheme as the world's first 'universal cash transfer' scheme for women. He said, "Every woman above the age of 18 in Punjab will be eligible for this scheme. Only current or former government employees, former and current MPs/MLAs, and income tax payers are excluded."
What is the purpose of this initiative?
According to Cheema, women receiving social security pensions (old age, widow, or disability pensions) will also be able to benefit from this scheme. He claimed that approximately 97 percent of adult women in Punjab will be covered.
The initiative aims to promote women's economic independence, strengthen their role in household decisions, improve health and nutrition levels, and encourage higher education and aspirations of girls.
