I tried Morrisons Christmas food and there's one dessert you need - not Christmas pudding
Another week goes by which means Christmas is drawing closer and closer. As I continue to battle with my own lack of festive spirit, Morrisons attempted to dazzle me once again for the third time this September by giving me an insight into what to expect to hit its shelves later this year.
Morrisons, its clothing brand Nutmeg, and homeware line Nutmeg Home unveiled a feast for the eyes and the tastebuds at its showcase in London. Nestled in a quaint and oldy-worldy side street in Southwark, Morrisons tried to transport me into its own grotto of goodies with a banquet table piled high with plates, cottagecore and kitsch crockery, and a sprinkling of glitter. There are a few products the supermarket wants you to take note of this year - out of over 200 and then some new items - from its The Best Signature Collection.
From party food to interactive starters, beefed up centrepieces to indulgent desserts, there is something for everyone's taste. But for me, there's one dessert that needs to be on your radar this Christmas - and in no way, shape or form does it resemble a traditional Christmas pud.
Growing up, the desserts at Christmas dinner excited me just as much as the roast with all the trimmings. Mainly because I was allowed to have creative control over the sweet part of the meal: no brandy-soaked fruit, no overrated traditional pud. I still enjoy pretending to be a pastry chef in my mum's kitchen to this day.
However, if I was running short on time or didn't feel like working myself to the bone, there's one dessert from Morrisons which I need on my dinner table. Preferably with one fork only.
The Best Signature Collection Belgian Chocolate & Praline Star. My god, what a pud.
Silky smooth chocolate ganache with flavours reminiscent of Nutella, a hint of crisp from its shell, decorated seamlessly, I couldn't want anything more from a dessert. Despite only getting a small sliver of the star, I would happily devour it in one sitting.
This is just one of the countless desserts Morrisons will be serving up to its customers this festive season, along with zingy fruit numbers like The Best Signature Collection Limoncello Panettone and The Best Signature Collection Winter Berry Topped Baked Cheesecake, recreated classics such as The Best Christmas Chocolate Profiterole Bowl, and enough cream to last a lifetime.
Christmas is all about the piece de resistance - the turkey - but it can be a divisive bird. If you don't cook it correctly, it can be incredibly dry and cloying to eat. A common complaint is that the bird is also lacking in flavour, but Morrisons are encouraging you to push the boat out.
If you're not a fan of turkey or just want to try something new, may I suggest The Best Signature Collection Christmas 'Tree Bone' with Chimichurri Rub and Rosemary & Thyme Butter
The addition of the chimichurri gives the meat a fresh taste, while the butter amps up the indulgence. Of course, if you do want to go the whole hog (well, bird), The Best Signature Collection Giant Double Stuffed Whole Turkey topped with Smoked Bacon
No Christmas dinner is complete without one thing, in my opinion: pigs in blankets. In my house they're almost burnt to a crisp, as per my dad's wishes. There is no other way to serve them.
Now if you're a proper PIBs fan, Morrisons' might just take the cake. No more tiny chipolatas and miniscule strips of bacon.
Thick, juicy and full of flavour, be on the lookout for The Best Signature Collection Hampshire Pork Pigs in Blankets
If you're looking for something to wash your Christmas feast down with, one of drinks expert Olly Smith's pick for this year is Morrisons The Best Gruner Veltliner. I stumbled across this wine while visiting a close friend in Vienna, it's an Austrian staple.
So if you're bored of sampling the same old savvy b or chardy, turn your attention to valleys of Lower Austria. It's a wine that will get a lot of attention in the next few years as it becomes en vogue. When I told Olly of my appreciation, he said I was ahead of the curve. Me, a trendsetter? Who knew?
Morrisons' Christmas offerings were a delight to see, even if I couldn't sample everything on the banquet table. It's been over a week and I'm still thinking about that dessert...
It's clear that I've been missing out on the Morrisons magic surrounding Christmas every year. That chocolate star dessert will be mine, even if I have to eat it all by myself before the big day.
Products will be launching over the next few months, with prices still being determined.
