Who Can Apply for the LOTUS Programme FY2026?
Candidates applying for this program must be under 40 years of age and must be affiliated with an Indian university or research institution. Candidates cannot apply independently. Applications can only be submitted through a Principal Investigator (PI) at a Japanese university or research institute who agrees to host the selected candidate. The deadline for applications is June 9, 2026. Following the application submission, the review and selection process will take place between June and August 2026, with the final results expected to be announced at the end of August.
What Are the Program’s Focus Areas?
The LOTUS Programme prioritizes students and researchers working in emerging and high-impact research fields. These include Artificial Intelligence (AI), Biotechnology, Energy and Renewable Energy, Materials Science, Quantum Technology, Semiconductors, and Telecommunications. Additionally, if a researcher is conducting interdisciplinary research related to these fields, their application may also be considered.
What are the two tracks of the LOTUS Program?
For FY2026, the program has been divided into two tracks. The first of these is LOTUS Basic. This track involves a research stay of up to 12 months. Its objective is to establish foundational collaboration and joint supervision with a Japanese professor. The second track is LOTUS ASPIRE (a new track). This involves a research stay of up to 36 months. Its objective is to achieve in-depth collaboration and tangible research outcomes. It includes additional funding and a structured evaluation process. The LOTUS ASPIRE track fosters intensive and results-oriented collaboration, thereby enhancing both the quality and impact of the research.
Academic Benefits of the LOTUS Program 2026
Selected participants in the LOTUS Program 2026 receive support—both financial and academic. They will be provided with a monthly stipend of approximately ₹1.4 lakhs, which covers living and dining expenses. Furthermore, additional funds are available to cover expenses related to research activities, travel within Japan, and collaborative efforts; however, the cost of travel between India and Japan is not included. Other benefits of the program include access to Japan’s advanced research infrastructure, opportunities for international academic networking, and potential pathways for future internships or employment in Japan.
