Mangaluru: Road humps installed during peak hours causing traffic snarls

Newspoint

Mangaluru: While the work of replacing worn-out road humps is underway across various roads in the city, the public has complained that conducting these installations during morning and evening hours is severely disrupting traffic flow.

Commuters noted that carrying out work during peak hours -- when students head to schools and colleges and employees travel to offices -- has led to significant congestion. Currently, the installation of humps is in progress between Sri Narayana Guru Circle (Ladyhill) and Kottara. This stretch is a major arterial road in the city, seeing a high volume of school buses, private vehicles, and inter-district buses traveling toward Udupi. Motorists expressed frustration over experiencing delays while work was carried out during these high traffic periods.

For the past few days, laborers have been working from morning until evening to install the humps. Since several of these roads experience heavy traffic, the public suggested that avoiding work on main roads during peak hours would prevent these issues.

With several roads still awaiting the installation of new humps, citizens have urged the authorities to plan the work to minimize public inconvenience. They further noted that many areas lack adequate street lighting and emphasized the need for proper cautionary signboards and painting of zebra crossings and humps.

One-kilometer vehicle queue

On Thursday morning, February 26, around 8:30 am, road humps were being installed at the Urwa Store junction, leading to a massive traffic jam. Vehicles were reportedly stuck in a queue stretching nearly one kilometer. Local resident Yogish urged the authorities to schedule such work outside of peak hours. He also noted that the humps are being made quite wide to allow smoother transit but emphasized that they must be effective enough to control vehicle speeds.
