Mumbai man lost job, had just Rs 2.5 lakh. Backpacked across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia for 3 months with no plan. What he learnt and what is he doing now?
A user on LinkedIn recently shared a deeply personal account of how losing what he once considered his ideal job pushed him toward an unexpected journey across Asia that ultimately reshaped his outlook on life. Omkar Rane, a marketing professional based in Mumbai, recounted that nearly two years ago, he set aside around $3,000 to fund a solo trip through multiple Asian countries.

He returned from that experience financially drained, physically unwell at one point, and emotionally uncertain about his direction. Yet, despite the hardships, he described the journey as transformative, fundamentally altering the way he understands life and personal growth.
At the time, he had just been dismissed from a role he had long aspired to. With no clear roadmap ahead, no defined goals, and only limited savings, he made an impulsive decision to leave everything behind and book a one-way flight to Bali in search of clarity. His family reacted with intense concern, fearing that such an unplanned move could lead him into dangerous situations or serious trouble. In hindsight, he admitted that some of those fears were not entirely unfounded.
Over the following three months, he lived out of a backpack, moving through countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The journey was filled with both difficult and exhilarating moments. He faced health issues, including a bout of food poisoning that required hospitalization and consumed a significant portion of his funds. He pushed his physical limits through Muay Thai training, often finding himself overwhelmed by more experienced fighters. There were also moments of poor judgment and discomfort, alongside spontaneous adventures like riding a motorbike through northern Vietnam, trekking up volcanoes, and navigating missed flights and nights spent in transit hubs.
Amid the chaos, there were also deeply meaningful experiences. He connected with people from diverse backgrounds, each navigating their own unique paths in life. These encounters helped him realize that certainty is rare, and most individuals are simply figuring things out as they move forward.
Today, Rane runs an independent marketing business through LinkedIn. Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledges that he is still learning and evolving. However, the experience taught him that waiting for complete clarity is unnecessary; taking the first step often matters more than having all the answers in advance.
