Chaitra Navratri 2026: The Vehicles of the Navadurga. Chaitra Navratri commences today. During Navratri, the nine distinct forms of Goddess Durga are worshipped. Each form of the Navadurga possesses its own unique power, attributes, and significance. The Navadurga are associated with various vehicles (Vahanas), which serve to represent their power, temperament, and symbolism. While the lion is the most renowned vehicle of Goddess Durga, the bull also serves as her mount in two of her forms.

Other vehicles, such as the donkey and the lotus, further highlight her distinct characteristics. The lion, Goddess Durga's primary vehicle, symbolizes valor; conversely, the bull represents patience, the tiger signifies agility, the donkey embodies the destruction of darkness, and the lotus symbolizes purity. Worshipping these forms during Navratri bestows upon devotees strength, wisdom, courage, and spiritual attainment. In the *Durga Saptashati*, the descriptions of these vehicles are intrinsically linked to themes of warfare and protection.

The Vehicles of the Navadurga and Their Significance

Goddess Shailaputri: Worshipped on the first day, she is the daughter of the King of Mountains, Himalaya. This form symbolizes stability and power. Her vehicle is the Nandi bull, which represents strength, patience, and steadfastness. The Goddess holds a trident and a lotus flower.

Goddess Brahmacharini: The deity of penance and knowledge, she is worshipped on the second day. This form embodies self-restraint and *Brahmavidya* (divine wisdom). Her vehicle is the lion.

Goddess Chandraghanta:

Worshipped on the third day, she appears in the guise of a warrior who vanquishes enemies. Her vehicle is the tiger, which symbolizes agility and swiftness.

Goddess Kushmanda: Revered as the creator of the universe and the source of energy for the Sun, she is worshipped on the fourth day. Her vehicle is the lion, which symbolizes her omnipotence and divine radiance.

Goddess Skandamata:

The worship of Goddess Skandamata is prescribed for the fifth day of Navratri. As the mother of Lord Kartikeya—the deity of motherhood and compassion—her vehicle is the lion, which signifies her protective power.

Goddess Katyayani: The worship of Goddess Katyayani is prescribed for the sixth day. The vehicle of this powerful deity—who vanquished the demon Mahishasura—is the tiger.

Among the nine goddesses, Mother Kalaratri represents the fiercest form—the destroyer of darkness and negativity. Her mount is a donkey, which symbolizes the eradication of evil and the destruction of ignorance. The Mother annihilated demons such as Raktabija.

Mother Mahagauri, the Goddess of purity and peace, is worshipped on the eighth day. Her mount is Nandi, the bull; the bull signifies the balance between her power and her gentleness.

Meanwhile, Mother Siddhidatri is the bestower of all *siddhis* (supernatural powers). Her mount is the lotus, which is regarded as a symbol of purity.
