Preparations underway to reduce road accidents; all bikes under 125cc to get a new braking system

Newspoint

The government is taking continuous steps to improve road safety across India, and a major update regarding two-wheelers has now been confirmed. Beginning June 2026, scooters and motorcycles with engines below 125 cc will come with a new braking system. Instead of the existing combined braking system (CBS), these vehicles will now be equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS).

This rule will primarily affect entry-level bikes, which are among the most widely used two-wheelers in the country.

Increasing accidents prompt the change

According to media reports, accidents involving small-engine motorcycles have risen steadily over recent years. Many serious incidents have occurred because bikes skid or lose balance during sudden braking. To address this, the Ministry of Road Transport has decided to make ABS mandatory for all bikes up to 125 cc.

A ministry study revealed that in 2023, 45 percent of fatalities in road accidents involved two-wheeler riders.

Experts explain that while CBS distributes braking force to both wheels for balanced stopping, ABS prevents the wheels from locking. This significantly reduces the chances of skidding and improves rider safety. With the new rules in place, millions of two-wheeler users are expected to benefit from safer braking technology.

Two helmets to be mandatory with each bike

The government has also announced another important safety guideline: starting June 2026, every new two-wheeler sold will include two helmets. This aims to ensure the safety of both the rider and the pillion passenger, rather than just one member of the household.
