Cyberbullying is getting worse day by day. For prominent figures on the internet, such as actors and influencers, it is much worse since every move they make is subjected to public scrutiny. Sonakshi Sinha has now spoken up about it, admitting that oftentimes, the internet and social media are not a controlled environment.

There have been many instances where actors and influencers have been pushed brutally because of people saying anything and everything on social media. The biggest example in current times is the unapologetic and downright rude comment section of every Arjun Kapoor post.

In a resurfaced video, Sonakshi Sinha spoke up about how social media and the internet have become a free mode of expressing opinions with no regard to other people.

Jo cheez jisse mujhe aur dikkat hai (the thing that troubled me) is this open attack on people online...Jo sabke saath hota hai, actors ke saath bhi hota hai, abhi toh critics ke saath hai

(It happens with everyone from actors to critics). I think that is something that we should all work towards putting an end to and try to figure a solution to that.. Ke koi bhi kahin bhi baithkar aapko kuch bhi bol rahe hai and there is not much people can do about it (that anyone from any part of the world can say anything to you and you can’t do anything about it). I feel we need to have strict laws to control it and keep a check on it.”

She talked about how there isn’t a proper way to react to such kind of online backlash, and that should change. It affects people just as strongly as in any other scenario. Just because you may not agree with someone’s opinion doesn’t give you the right to straight-up bully them.

Why are critics under so much fire?

Critics saw a massive turn in how they review movies onceDhurandharcame out. If there was a single negative review of the film, people were downright abusing them for expressing their opinions. It was so brutal, especially in the case of Anupama Chopra and Suchitra Tyagi.

They were forced to take down their reviews because of the massive backlash they were facing. Critics weren’t just being bullied, but being downright harassed because their opinions did not align with the public.

The FGA also released a statement for it, “The Film Critics Guild (FCG) strongly condemns the targeted attacks, harassment, and hate directed toward film critics for their reviews of Dhurandhar

. What began as disagreement has rapidly devolved into coordinated abuse, personal attacks on individual critics, and organised attempts to discredit their professional integrity.”

It continued, “In recent days, several of our members have faced intimidation, including direct threats and vicious online campaigns aimed at silencing their perspectives, simply for expressing their professional assessment of a film. More concerningly, there have been attempts to tamper with existing reviews, influence editorial positions, and persuade publications to alter or dilute their stance. Liking or disliking a film is your right, but expecting critics to fall in line is not.”

Expressing one’s opinion on the internet is liberating, but what matters is that each opinion is respected equally.
