RailTel, a Navaratna public sector company, operates one of India’s largest neutral telecom networks, with over 63,000 route kilometres of optical fibre connecting cities, towns, rural areas and more than 6,000 railway stations. It provides digital services to government departments, public sector organisations, banks, educational institutions and private enterprises.
Through the partnership, RailTel’s nationwide fibre network will be combined with Tata Communications’ global digital networks, cloud infrastructure, communication platforms and cybersecurity capabilities. The goal is to modernise network infrastructure, improve resilience, strengthen cyber protection, and support secure cloud adoption for sensitive workloads.
The collaboration also aims to integrate AI-based tools to improve performance, reliability, and visibility across digital operations.
The move comes at a time when India is rapidly scaling its digital infrastructure to support artificial intelligence, cloud computing, 5G services, and enterprise digitisation. While resilient networks, edge computing, and secure data frameworks are becoming increasingly important as government services, businesses, and citizen-facing platforms expand their reliance on digital technologies.
For RailTel, the collaboration allows it to offer more advanced services in areas such as data centres, managed services, cloud, and cybersecurity. For Tata Communications, it offers an opportunity to extend its digital infrastructure into critical national and enterprise networks. The partnership could enhance services ranging from railway Wi-Fi and public broadband to digital governance platforms and surveillance systems.
