According to the *Panchang* (Hindu almanac), Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the *Tritiya* (third) *Tithi* of the *Shukla Paksha* (waxing phase of the moon) during the month of *Vaishakh*. This year, the festival will be celebrated on April 19th. It is believed that the spiritual merit (*Punya*) gained from performing auspicious deeds on Akshaya Tritiya never diminishes or perishes. Furthermore, this specific *Tithi* is also recognized as an *Abujh Muhurat* (an inherently auspicious time). Let us explore this concept further.

**The Significance of Akshaya Tritiya**
In Hinduism, Akshaya Tritiya is regarded as a day that bestows good fortune and success. Acts of *Japa* (chanting), *Tapa* (penance), *Yajna* (sacrificial rituals), *Pitra-Tarpan* (ancestral rites), and *Daan-Punya* (charitable deeds) performed on this day yield spiritual merit for the individual—merit whose positive effects remain undiminished throughout one's entire lifetime. Additionally, purchasing gold on Akshaya Tritiya holds special significance; it is traditionally associated with bringing happiness and prosperity.

Moreover, beyond the realm of Hinduism, this festival is also considered highly auspicious in Jainism. It is believed that Lord Rishabhanatha—the first *Tirthankara* of Jainism—broke his fast (*Parana*) with sugarcane juice (*Ikshu Ras*) on this very day: the *Tritiya Tithi* of the *Shukla Paksha* in the month of *Vaishakh*.

**What is an *Abujh Muhurat*?**

In Hinduism, no auspicious or ceremonial undertaking is typically commenced without first identifying an *auspicious Muhurat* (propitious time). It is believed that any task performed during an auspicious *Muhurat* yields favorable results for the individual. In this context, an *Abujh Muhurat* refers to a sacred and inherently auspicious day on which one need not consult astrological calculations, the *Panchang*, or specific timings to perform any ceremonial or auspicious activity. These periods are also referred to as *Swayamsiddha Muhurats* (self-validated auspicious times).

**Why it is Called an *Abujh Muhurat***

According to the scriptures, Akshaya Tritiya is a unique *Tithi* (lunar day) on which one may solemnize marriages and undertake other auspicious activities without the need to consult astrological charts or search the *Panchang* for a specific favorable time. Consequently, this day is considered an ideal occasion for the marriages of couples who have been unable to finalize a wedding date due to astrological impediments (*Graha Doshas*) in their horoscopes or difficulties in matching their astrological compatibility (*Guna Milan*).

For these reasons, Akshaya Tritiya is revered as an *Abujh Muhurat*. Due to its status as an 'Abujh Muhurat' (an inherently auspicious time), Akshay Tritiya is a day when, in addition to weddings, other auspicious and ceremonial rituals—such as engagements, *Mundan* (first haircut ceremonies), and *Namkaran* (naming ceremonies)—are performed. Furthermore, this day is considered highly propitious for embarking on any new endeavor.
