Tension filled the air at the Narendra Modi Stadium when a single moment sparked a major debate during the IPL 2026 clash between Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The controversy centered around a catch taken by Jason Holder that led to the dismissal of Rajat Patidar.

The incident took place in the eighth over of RCB’s innings, bowled by Arshad Khan. Rajat Patidar attempted a pull shot on a short delivery but only managed a top edge. The ball went high towards deep backward square leg, where Jason Holder and Kagiso Rabada nearly collided while going for the catch. Kagiso Rabada backed off at the last moment, leaving Jason Holder to complete the effort.

However, the drama began after the catch. As Jason Holder slid on the ground, it appeared that the ball may have touched the turf or was pressed against it while he tried to regain balance. Despite these doubts, the TV umpire ruled it a fair catch, stating that the fielder had control.

This decision did not go down well with the RCB camp. Virat Kohli and head coach Andy Flower were seen in a detailed discussion with the match officials near the boundary, questioning whether Jason Holder had full control of the ball.

The ruling was based on the MCC Law 33.3, which explains that a catch is considered complete only when the fielder has full control of both the ball and their movement. In simple terms, if the player is in control, the catch is valid, even if there is slight contact with the ground.

A similar situation had occurred in July 2023 involving Mitchell Starc and England’s Ben Duckett, where the catch was ruled not out due to lack of control. That decision had also divided opinions, with Glenn McGrath strongly criticising it.

Former West Indies pacer Ian Bishop also felt Jason Holder might not have been fully in control, suggesting there was enough doubt to question the decision.
