7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Indonesia, Tsunami Threats Later Lifted

A powerful earthquake struck Indonesia, once again highlighting the country’s volatile position due to it sitting right in the Pacific Ring of Fire. This is one of the most seismically active zones on Earth as it lies at the intersection of the Indo-Australian plate, the Eurasian plate and Pacific plate. The most critical feature is the Sunda Trench where the Indo- Australian plate is subducting beneath the Eurasian plate. This results in frequent earthquakes, high tsunami risk and an active volcanic chain of over 120 volcanoes.

Cause

The earthquakes in Indonesia were caused primarily by the subduction tone activity where one tectonic plate dives under another and this builds immense pressure over time and sudden release causes powerful earthquakes.

Also, Indonesia has many active fault systems, for example the Sumatra Fault. These produce shallow earthquakes which are often more destructive. Volcanic activity and movement of magma in general can also trigger seismic activity.

Indonesia’s biggest danger is not just earthquakes but tsunamis too. An undersea earthquake occurs and seafloor shifts vertically which causes massive water displacement and water travels at high speed and hits coastlines. An example of this is the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami where the magnitude was of 9.1-9.3 and death toll was of around 2,30,000.

Significant damage

A massive earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit offshore near Ternate Island in North Maluku with a depth of approximately 35 km. This happened around morning local time in Indonesia. Tsunami warnings were initially issued across Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines with actual waves recorded up to 0.75 metres in North Sulawesi. The Tsunami threats were later cancelled, meaning no large destructive waves occurred.
Newspoint

At least 1 confirmed fatality (caused by falling debris) with multiple people injured and also evacuation and panic reported in coastal regions. There were also reports of many buildings damaged like homes, a church and even some local structures. The cities affected were Ternate, Bitung and Manado. The damage level was reported to be minor to moderate overall but not catastrophic.

Multiple aftershocks were recorded with around 10-50 tremors were reported and the largest were around 5.5-6.2 magnitude. This meant continued risk was there especially for weakened buildings.

Significance of the earthquake

This earthquake was significant because the magnitude was above 7.0 which indicates that it was a major earthquake. It also occurred in a subduction zone i.e Ring of Fire. It also triggered tsunami alerts across multiple countries but damage stayed limited because the epicenter was offshore, Tsunami remained small and response systems were activated quickly.
