Catastrophic Crash Over Potomac

The ill-fated American Airlines flight was carrying 64 individuals, including passengers and crew, while the helicopter had three people on board at the time of impact.

Eyewitnesses and social media footage captured the horrifying moment when the two aircraft collided, leading to an immediate crash into the river. Fireboats and rescue teams rushed to the scene to aid in recovery efforts, as confirmed by the Washington Fire Department.

Collision Details and Flight Path

Reports indicate that American Airlines Flight 5342, a Bombardier CRJ-701 twin-engine jet, was approaching Reagan Airport when it encountered a Black Hawk helicopter near the airfield. Data from the plane's radio transponder revealed that it was descending at approximately 400 feet altitude and traveling at a speed of 140 miles per hour before the collision.

Air traffic controllers had directed the plane to land on Runway 33, a last-minute change that required adjustments to its flight path. Shortly before the accident, controllers had also asked the helicopter pilot if the jet was in sight, issuing an instruction, "PAT 25 pass behind the CRJ." Moments later, disaster struck as the two aircraft collided midair.

Immediate Aftermath and Airport Shutdown

Following the crash, Reagan National Airport swiftly suspended all flight operations to facilitate emergency response efforts.

Confirming the suspension, Reagan Airport stated in an X post, “All takeoffs and landings have been halted at DCA. Emergency personnel are responding to an aircraft incident on the airfield. The terminal remains open. Will update."

Authorities, including the Metropolitan Police Department, also confirmed their involvement in managing the situation. “MPD is responding to an apparent air crash in the Potomac River. Multiple agencies are responding," the department shared on X.

Ongoing Investigation

As officials work to determine the cause of the crash, Senator Ted Cruz acknowledged the severity of the incident, stating, “I am closely monitoring the situation at DCA, and I will receive a briefing from the FAA tomorrow. While we don’t yet know how many on board were lost, we know there are fatalities."

The devastating accident has raised serious questions about air traffic coordination and safety protocols in high-traffic zones. Authorities are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to understand what led to the tragic collision and prevent future occurrences.
