Nepal’s restless Gen Z protesters have found an unexpected leader in former Chief Justice Sushila Karki . Raman Kumar Karna, secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association, revealed that the agitators want her as interim prime minister. Their next move: presenting the proposal to the Nepal Army chief.

The demand comes at a time when Nepal is reeling under political turmoil, violent protests, and a leadership vacuum following Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli ’s resignation. For the youth, Karki symbolizes law, order, and integrity. “My immediate concern is the law and order in the country. To maintain it, the country requires a person who is knowledgeable about the law. For this, Sushila Karki is the right option,” a student told ANI.

Who is Sushila Karki ?

Born in Biratnagar in 1952, Karki has been a trailblazer all her life. She began her legal career in 1979 and rose through the ranks, becoming Nepal’s first female Chief Justice in 2016. Her journey—from Senior Advocate to Supreme Court judge—was marked by resilience and groundbreaking achievements. For many young protesters, her clean image and legal expertise make her the ideal choice to steer the nation through chaos.

Protests Turn Deadly

The push for change hasn’t come without tragedy. In just two days, at least 25 people including three policemen lost their lives. Nineteen youths were killed when security forces opened fire outside Parliament, while mobs in Kathmandu’s Koteshwor area killed three policemen. Clashes at Kalimati Police Station also left three protesters dead.

The unrest began on September 8, 2025, after the government banned major social media platforms, citing tax and cybersecurity concerns. What started as outrage against digital restrictions quickly turned into a wider movement demanding accountability and transparency.

According to Nepal’s Home Ministry, more than 600 people have been injured so far. In response, the Nepal Army has enforced nationwide restrictive orders and a curfew, hoping to prevent further escalation.

As the streets burn with frustration, Gen Z’s call for Sushila Karki to lead signals a strong desire for fresh leadership rooted in integrity. Whether the political establishment will agree or resist—remains Nepal’s next big question.
