Japan Hit by 7.6 Magnitude Earthquake; Tsunami Alert Issued for Northern Coast
A powerful earthquake rattled Japan’s northern coast on Monday, triggering a tsunami alert and putting coastal communities on high alert. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake measured magnitude 7.6 and struck offshore, with its epicentre located about 50 kilometres below sea level near Aomori city.
The strong tremor was felt across parts of northern Japan, prompting immediate precautionary measures. Authorities issued a tsunami warning for regions including Hokkaido and surrounding coastal areas, cautioning that waves as high as three metres could hit the shoreline.
Residents in the affected zones were advised to stay away from the coast, move to higher ground if necessary, and strictly follow evacuation and safety instructions issued by local officials. Emergency response teams were placed on standby as monitoring efforts intensified.
