Trump Says Putin ‘Killing A Lot Of Russians,’ Claims Ukraine War Should’ve Ended In 7 Days

US President Donald Trump has claimed that deep-seated “hatred” between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is preventing an end to the ongoing war, which has now stretched into its fourth year. Trump also revealed that he had nearly brokered a peace deal between the two leaders just two months ago.

Speaking at a Ballroom Dinner event on Wednesday, Trump said,

“I thought we had a deal. The hatred of the two leaders (Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky) is a lot, it is an obstacle. There’s no question about it. But I thought we had a deal two months ago. Who would think I created peace in the Middle East and can’t get the two guys to settle? But I think we’ll get them.”

Trump Takes Swipe at Putin

In a pointed remark, Trump said the prolonged conflict had damaged Putin’s image, arguing that the Russian leader should have wrapped up the war quickly.

“It doesn’t make him look good. It’s a war that he should have won in one week, and he’s now going into his fourth year,” Trump said.
“And all we want from President Putin is stop this. Stop killing Ukrainians and stop killing Russians, because he’s killing a lot of Russians.”

The US President suggested that both sides were suffering heavy losses and reiterated his call for an immediate halt to hostilities.

India’s Role in Oil Trade

Trump also claimed that India had assured him it would stop buying Russian oil, a move he said would ease global pressure on Moscow.

“But if India doesn’t buy oil, it makes it much easier. And they’re not going to buy. They assured me they will, within a short period of time, they will not be buying oil from Russia. And they will go back to Russia after the war is over,” Trump added.

India, one of Russia’s key energy partners since Western sanctions began, has not commented publicly on the claim.

“Stepping Up Pressure” with NATO Allies

Last week, Trump said the United States and NATO allies were “stepping up the pressure” to end the war after his outreach to Putin failed to achieve a ceasefire.

“Yeah, we are stepping up the pressure,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office during a meeting with Finnish President Alexander Stubb. “We’re stepping it up together. We’re all stepping it up. NATO has been great.”

Trump on Ukraine’s Prospects

Following his recent meeting with President Zelensky, Trump had expressed optimism about Ukraine’s military future. He claimed that Kyiv could reclaim all its occupied territory — and possibly even more.

While critics accuse Trump of overstating his diplomatic reach, the US President continues to present himself as a potential peace broker, seeking to position his administration as the one that could end the bloodiest European conflict in decades
