Neena Gupta’s Fiancé Called Off Wedding Days Before; Re-Proposed Six Months Later

Neena Gupta, who has always lived life on her own terms, recently opened up about a deeply personal chapter from the 1980s, when her wedding plans came to an abrupt and painful halt. Long before she challenged societal norms by raising her daughter Masaba Gupta as a single mother, the veteran actor had planned to settle down. However, her life took an unexpected turn when her fiancé walked away just days before their wedding.

During a conversation with Humans of Bombay, Neena recalled the shock of being abandoned without any clear explanation. “I was engaged to a guy who ditched me at the last minute. In my mind, I was set to have a kid, and the ring ceremony had already happened. I had gone to Delhi to buy my clothes and jewellery, and suddenly I got a call from him saying that we weren't getting married right now. I asked what happened, and he said he needed to get his sinus operation done,” she shared.

What made the situation even more bewildering was what followed months later. “I didn’t think it was a major issue. That operation could have been done later. Till date, I don’t know the reason behind breaking off the wedding. I kept asking his parents what happened, but they never told me. Then he came back after six months and said he wanted to marry me. I said, ‘F*** off. Now I don’t want to marry you,’” Neena said candidly.

Despite repeatedly seeking answers, the actor never found closure on why the wedding was called off. Reflecting on the experience, she added, “Even then, I asked him, ‘First tell me why you wanted to postpone the wedding.’ He didn’t tell me. So, you don’t know what circumstances someone is going through. We often have to take decisions out of helplessness, so let’s not judge people based on their decisions.”

Following this episode, Neena Gupta went on to have a relationship with legendary cricketer Vivian Richards and welcomed her daughter Masaba Gupta out of wedlock - an unconventional and bold choice at the time. She later married chartered accountant Vivek Mehra in 2008. In a rare and heartwarming moment, Neena, Vivek Mehra and Vivian Richards were all present at Masaba Gupta’s wedding to actor Satyadeep Mishra, standing together in support of their daughter.

On the professional front, Neena Gupta has carved a powerful second innings in her career with acclaimed performances in popular shows like Panchayat and Masaba Masaba. She will next be seen in Vadh 2, co-starring Sanjay Mishra, which is slated to release in theatres on February 6.
